The Status and Distribution of European Mammals, compiled by Helen J Temple and Andrew Terry has recently been published by the IUCN in collaboration with the European Union.

This is the first review of the conservation status of all wild mammals in Europe according to the IUCN regional Red Listing guidelines.

The European Mammal Assessment shows that many mammals are declining and 15.5% of Europe's 231 species are threatened with extinction. A further 9% are close to qualifying for threatened status.
